Yeast Infection: The Facts
Yeast infection is a widespread medical condition. Yeast infection can manifest itself in a number of ways in our bodies. However, it is prevalent in the genital areas, particularly in females. For the purpose of this article, we will be discussing vaginal yeast infection. Although it is essentially mild and harmless in most cases, if left untreated, it can be very harmful. Sometimes it takes on life-threatening forms, especially in people with compromised immune systems such as cancer, AIDS or transplant patients. It is essential to know about the facts regarding yeast infection. Some of them are:
- Common: Yeast infections are widespread. It is stated that a large number of women have yeast infections at one point. The percentages are as high as 50 to 75 percent. However, it is essential to recognize the fact that one has a yeast infection and work towards getting rid of it.
- Yeasts Are Present In Your Body: Yeast infections are a medical condition. However it is important to understand that yeast are normally present in a healthy female body. They live mostly in the vaginal tract. The warmth and moisture of the vaginal tract make it a habitat for both the yeast known as candida yeast and the bacteria called lactobacilli.
The lactobacilli keep the number of yeast in check under normal circumstances. This creates a balance in the vaginal tract. However if the number of lactobacilli or the acidity in the tract is decreased, such yeast begin to thrive and multiply, disturbing the balance. This becomes a case of vaginal yeast infection medically known as Candidiasis.
- Not Sexually Transmitted: Yeast infection does not fall into the category of sexually transmitted diseases. This is because it is a medical condition which affects even celibate women. Also the infection is not transferred to the male genitalia via sexual intercourse. There is, however, a possibility that yeast infection may cause redness and itching on the top part of the penis.
- Treatable: In many cases the yeast infection does not require specific treatment, as it clears up on its own. Normally this takes around two weeks. However a medical professional should be immediately consulted if the irritation lasts for more than two weeks or is frequently occurring. The case sometimes gets worse with the passage of time and the help of a trained medical professional may be required to make sure that matters don’t get any worse.
- Pregnancy And Yeast Infection: Yeast infection may occur as a result of pregnancy. This is because pregnancy causes hormonal changes in the body. However it is important to note the widespread misconception regarding yeast infections causing pregnancy test results to be erroneously positive. Usually only pregnancy results in positive results. Also there is another misconception regarding yeast infection possibly harming your chances of getting pregnant. This is very unlikely and extremely rare.
There is a wide range of treatments available in the market to treat this condition. Self-medication is highly discouraged as it can cause other complications. It is, however, recommended that you visit a medical professional for advice before taking any medicine.
